RIBA short-list entry
Conceived as a simple glass rectangle the components of the building are grouped around the line and circle – the circle as the traditional symbol of a secure gathering and the line to give a sense of unity where none exists. The linking element of the building is the three dimensional line (wall) which runs east/ west anchoring the circle in the east and pointing to the iconic bridge to the west. Along its length are located all the major activities with the toilets, being wrapped in a solid void within the line. Conceived as a display wall internally its external form represents an abstract manifestation of a bridge element off which the building hangs. The linkage is reinforced with access/ escape stairs located at its extremities which provide a vertical as well as horizontal communion between the building interior, exterior and immediate environs.
