4 bedroom private house
Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, UK
The client wished to use a steeply sloping area of garden as a development opportunity for a 4 bedroom house.
Perched on the side of a hill overlooking the town centre, the site demanded a dramatic gesture both in form and material. Incorporating a glazed solar void the building rises through 4 floors with a split level kitchen/ dining area.
Stone, natural render and lead cladding reflect the local character but in a style that is demonstrably modern and not a poor imitation of the venacular style of the area. Growing out of the hill the simple geometric form of the dwelling presents a perfect example of architecture as an object both within and of its setting.
